The Rolex Middle Sea Race 2023

The 44th edition of the Rolex Middle Sea Race in 2023 has left an indelible mark on the world of competitive sailing, showcasing the resilience and exceptional skills of sailors from across the globe. This renowned event drew a diverse fleet of international yachts, all seeking supremacy in a demanding 606-nautical-mile voyage through the captivating Mediterranean. The race unfolded with its fair share of dramatic moments, historic achievements, and a global cast of talented sailors.

At the close of this thrilling competition, the Italian vessel, Wally 93 Bullitt, under the leadership of Andrea Recordati, emerged as the victor of the 44th Rolex Middle Sea Race.

The declaration came moments after the double-handed entry, Red Ruby, crossed the finish line at 20.51.35, a mere 24 seconds away from the time required to secure first place.

The Royal Malta Yacht Club has since confirmed that none of the remaining yachts still in the race could surpass Bullitt’s corrected time, sealing their triumph.

The Rolex Middle Sea Race maintains its allure, consistently drawing mariners from every corner of the world. This year, over 100 yacht entries represented 26 different nations, highlighting the genuinely global appeal of this prestigious race. Participants hailed from diverse countries, including Kazakhstan, the United States, Spain, and Australia, emphasizing the event’s extensive international reach.

The journey began in the historic Valletta’s Grand Harbour, positioned just below the iconic Fort St. Angelo. Sailors embarked on a thrilling 606-nautical-mile adventure, taking them to the eastern coast of Sicily, navigating the challenging waters of the Strait of Messina, and continuing to the enchanting Aeolian Islands, passing by the awe-inspiring Stromboli volcano. Following a strategic route between Marettimo and Favignana, they charted their course southward to Lampedusa, ultimately returning to Malta via Pantelleria.

The Rolex Middle Sea Race has come a long way since its inception in 1968. What began as a friendly competition has now evolved into a celebrated event in the world of sailing. Maltese yachts have excelled, clinching victory on nine occasions, with the Podesta siblings achieving back-to-back wins in 2020 and 2021 aboard Elusive II.

The 44th Rolex Middle Sea Race serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of adventure and camaraderie among sailors. Confronted with challenging conditions and dramatic setbacks, the participants showcased their resilience and remarkable skills. As the event continues to attract a diverse international audience, it remains a symbol of excellence in the realm of competitive sailing.
