Whether in a massive yacht or a little sailing boat, there’s nothing quite like being at sea. Nowadays, whenever you hear celebrities and boats mentioned in the same sentence, it usually involves some Hollywood star lazing about on a mega yacht. And with their hectic lifestyles, being chased by the lenses of paparazzi and glaring eyes of the media wherever they go, who could blame celebrities for wanting to get as far away as possible every now and again?
Our team at Camilleri Marine – vendors of the most reliable sailing products Malta has to offer – shares our pick of some of our favourite celebrities who love(d) boating.
1. Albert Einstein
For the theoretical physicist, sailing was an escape, and reportedly used sailing as a way to think. From laying the foundation of modern physics to winning Nobel Prizes, was there anything this man couldn’t do?! Well, Albert Einstein was not even close to being the best of sailors. According to his biographers, he never really mastered the physics of sailing, often losing direction, frequently almost colliding with other vessels, sometimes capsizing and he couldn’t even swim! Not that that stopped him from enjoying it.
2. Morgan Freeman
For the Academy-Award actor, producer and narrator, sailing is his refuge and passion. Freeman claims that his passion started off as a child, when he was fascinated by books about the sea. At the age of thirty, he was given a boat which he learned how to sail. One of his most memorable trips was when he sailed to Bermuda in 1979 on a 9.14 metre sloop with his then wife-to-be. On their way back, they hit a storm with 50-knot winds. Since then, the Hollywood actor has sailed as far as Trinidad.
3. John F. Kennedy
History books are filled with a smiling JFK sailing the waters in his gorgeous wooden cruiser. Kennedy was a lifelong sailor, way before he even became president. In fact, he began sailing at a young age and won several events as a racer. Once he became the 35th president of the USA, sailing became a respite for him, a perfect temporary escape from the heavy burdens of his office. The avid sailor later thought his wife Jackie and his two children how to sail.
“… it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it we are going back from whence we came.” – J. F. Kennedy
